A 109-year-old great-grandmother works away every day on her Singer Sewing Machine in Navidamu.

Dionani Salaivanu has a hearing problem,  which she compensates by her direct gestures but despite this and her advanced years, age has not deterred her from doing all she can to help her local community, financially.

Her frail memory hasn’t robbed her of the knowledge that hard work always pays.

Mrs Salaivanu works hard at her old Singer sewing machine, a relic of another era, producing doormats and other clothing needs for her seaside village.

Navidamu falls within Macuata district and is a three-hour bus ride about 100 kilometres from Labasa, Figi.
